A Hawaii flag Hawaii Olomana, Kailu
"The majority of the students at Olomana School selected the Hawaii state flag as the artifact to be included from our state in the time capsule because they felt that it had historical significance with our past, present, and future. Our past is reflected in the creation of the flag which was commissioned by our first king (King Kamehameha)--8 stripes represent each of our major islands, and the British influence on our state's history (British flag in the upper left corner). It also represents the present because we are now a part of the United States and this is our state flag. The flag also represents our future because it has also been used as a symbol for the sovereignty movement by native Hawaiians who desire independence and recognition as a sovereign nation."
