Pennsylvania Pocono Mountain Intermediate School- North Campus, Tobyhanna
"As the second millennium of the Christian Era closes, thirty-five Pocono
Mountain School District students have selected Telecommunications as the most representative idea of the United States at this point in its history. As items for a time capsule they would select a cellular telephone, a mini-TV and a computer chip. The students admire the technology, freedom, education, creativity and innovation that have enabled mankind to communicate with the most remote areas of our world and our universe.
"These students value the freedom, which is their heritage. They are
proud to live in this country which leads the world economically,
technologically, and as the remaining superpower. One student calls the
United States the 'Powerhouse of the World.'
"However, many of the students believe that while the nation is
superior in material ways, there is need to improve the human quality of life. They are troubled by news reports of violence, pollution, welfare cheating, corruption in business and government. In their classrooms they are disturbed by lack of respect for education and by apathetic and disruptive students who don't value learning.
"Most of these gifted young people look forward to the future with
optimism. Nearly all hope to play a role in improving life for their
fellow citizens of the world. They embody the spirit of the American dream."
