The importance of democracy
"In my view the message from our time to the future that can best capture our unique heritage, achievements, and hopes is one that starts with the fact that ours is the first system of government in the world that derives its powers from us, the people…My hope for the next century and beyond is that government of the people, by the people, and for the people will be successfully adapted here at home to the strains and demands stemming from a larger and more diverse population, growing complexity, and increasing globalization while also being successfully adopted by other people all around the world. Only through such a process, I believe, will it be possible to achieve a progressively more stable, progressive, and peaceful world community."
