Kathryn Shaw Kathryn Shaw was confirmed by the Senate on May 24, 2000 to serve as a Member of the Council of Economic Advisers. Dr. Shaw is currently on leave from Carnegie Mellon University, where she is Professor of Economics in the business school. During Professor Shaw's years at Carnegie Mellon, she has published on a range of topics in labor economics and human resource management, and in 1996 was listed as one of the Top 50 Economists in the profession (based on the amount of publications). In 1998 she was honored as the recipient of the Minnesota Award for Employment Research for the best paper in 1997-98 on the topic of employment issues. She has been the recipient of the Xerox Research Chair, has served on a Research Panel of the NSF, and has been an Editor of the Journal of Labor Economics. At Carnegie Mellon University, Shaw has received the Economics Department Teaching Award, was Chair of the Faculty Senate, and was Head of the Department of Industrial Management. Most recently, Professor Shaw's research focuses on productivity and human resource management in the steel industry. In work that has been published in the American Economic Review and Management Science, she and her colleagues evaluate the effectiveness of innovative managerial practices. In related work on franchising, she examines franchise contracts in a recent article in the Journal of Political Economy. Her research has been extensively funded by the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the Department of Labor. Dr. Shaw received her Ph.D. in economics at Harvard University in 1981 and has been on the faculty at Carnegie Mellon University since then. In 1984-1985 she was a Visiting Economist at the Federal Reserve Board. Dr. Shaw is married to Dr. Ricard Townsend, a trauma surgeon, and they reside in Pittsburgh with their three children, Laura, Brian, and Kevin.
