| First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton Arrival Statement
 Sofia, Bulgaria
 October 11, 1998

I am delighted to have the opportunity to make my first trip to Bulgaria.
I am particularly pleased to be here at such an historic time. The friendship
between our nations has never been stronger. And the progress you've made
in building democracy, pursuing economic reforms, and cultivating a vibrant
civil society is setting an example for all of Southeast Europe. The road to
progress will sometimes be filled with obstacles and setbacks. But, as you continue
to move forward, my country will stand beside you.
During my visit, I look forward to participating in an important regional
conference spotlighting the vital role that women must play in working together
to lift up their own lives and the future of this region. I am grateful that
I will have the opportunity to see firsthand how citizens are rebuilding Bulgaria
from non-governmental organizations to women small business owners. I
will also visit the American College of Sofia a powerful symbol not only
of Bulgaria's commitment to education, but also of the bond between our
two countries. I will have the pleasure of meeting with President Stoyanov and
Mrs. Stoyanova, Prime Minister Kostov and Mrs. Kostova, and other governmental
leaders to learn about their vision for Bulgaria. And I look forward to seeing
some of your beautiful capital, Sofia.
Bulgaria has embarked on a new and exciting chapter in its history. I am honored
to have the opportunity to meet with the citizens who have made this possible
and talk about the role that regional cooperation and women must play
in creating an even stronger future tomorrow.
