First Lady

The study, practice and appreciation of the arts challenges, inspires and lifts up individuals and societies. As First Lady, Mrs. Clinton has dedicated herself to the celebration and recognition of all the arts. As Honorary Chair of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities (PCAH) she has led efforts to support the unique contributions that the arts and humanities make to American life, while acting as the Administration's leading advocate for public support of national arts initiatives through the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Mrs. Clinton has organized a series of 20th Century American Sculpture exhibits in the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden at the White House. She has worked hard to ensure the White House, often referred to as “The People's House,” represents art from all Americans. Through her efforts the White House collection has acquired its first ever painting by an African American— a landscape by Henry Ossawa Tanner.

Mrs. Clinton is also involved in preserving many of the nation's most treasured arts and archives through the Millennium Council's Save America's Treasures initiative. In addition she has initiated a campaign to stress the value and importance of arts education as a necessary part of mainstream elementary and secondary school curriculum.
