Near East and South Asian Affairs
Special Assistant to
the President and Senior Director
The Near East and South Asia Office advises and assists the President and the
National Security Advisor on all aspects of U.S. foreign policy with
respect to U.S. foreign and defense policies regarding four distinct
areas abroad: North Africa, the Levant, the Persian Gulf and South Asia.
Among the issues the Office provides advice and assistance to the
President on are the Middle East peace process; the continued
containment of rogue states such as Iraq, Iran, and Libya; the
maintenance of good relations with several important U.S. allies; and the
challenges for U.S. policy posed by political and economic reform, regional
development, ethnic conflict, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
and the rise of political Islam.
