THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

June 29, 1994

STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

House Of Representatives Approval of Space Station

The House of Representatives' strong approval today of the international Space Station clears the way for a new era of space exploration and cooperation with our international partners, including Russia. NASA's successful effort to redesign the Space Station has produced a better Station, available sooner and at a lower cost. Further, Russian participation will greatly benefit our space program, further lower the cost and provide an invaluable opportunity for peaceful cooperation in space with our former adversary.

The strength of the House vote signals the end of doubt about America's commitment to space exploration. Instead, it reaffirms America's strong support for involvement in an international project that provides valuable economic, scientific and technological benefits for all Americans.
