Warm greetings to all Americans.

During this holiday season, we will have an opportunity to witness a rare moment in history--the end of a century and the birth of a new millennium. The arrival of the 21st century is a time to reflect on where we have been, who we are, and what we hope to become. It is a time to celebrate the achievements of our great nation and the promise of what we have yet to accomplish.

With just 11 days left before the new millennium, we would like to extend a national invitation to ring in the New Year in our nation’s capital with "America’s Millennium: A Celebration for the Nation." The spectacular three-day celebration will bring Americans together to participate in this exciting moment in history with activities beginning on December 31, 1999, and continuing through January 2, 2000. America’s Millennium will educate, inspire, and celebrate the creative spirit of America through the theme, "Honor the Past-- Imagine the Future."

Special events include the Opening Ceremony and the unveiling of the National Millennium Time Capsule, performances by children from around the world, a Washington, D.C. block party, workshops at the Smithsonian museums, and America’s Millennium New Year’s Eve Gala at the Lincoln Memorial. The gala, produced by George Stevens, Jr., and Quincy Jones and hosted by Will Smith, will feature a star-studded concert of great American music, the world premiere of the Steven Spielberg film, The Unfinished Journey, and a spectacular sound and light show with an unforgettable fireworks display that will serve as the nation’s salute to the new century. All of the activities on the Mall are free and open to the public.

America’s Millennium gives us a unique opportunity to come together as a nation to commemorate the close of the 20th century and the start of a new millennium. Along with our Congressional Co-Chairs for America’s Millennium-- Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, and House Democratic Leader Dick Gephardt-- we sincerely hope you will join us in Washington to celebrate this remarkable milestone.

Happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year, the new century, and the new millennium.
