                      STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

Tipper and I were deeply saddened to learn of Congressman Julian
Dixon's death Friday. For 22 years, Julian represented his Los Angeles,
California district, his state and the nation with great distinction. He
was a champion of civil rights, a powerful voice for national security, and
a strong advocate for the District of Columbia. He worked diligently to
ensure that every American's voice could be heard, and earned the
admiration and respect of all who knew him.

We will all miss Julian Dixon's wisdom, kindness and devotion to his
country. Today, Tipper and I join Julian's wife Bettye, his son Carey, his
family and friends in honoring him and his legacy of public service.
