   PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JAMES FREE TO THE FEDERAL HOME LOAN MORTGAGE
                      CORPORATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS

     President Clinton announced today his intent to appoint James C. Free
to the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation
(Freddie Mac).

     Mr. James C. Free, of Washington, D.C., is President and CEO of the
Smith-Free Group. After serving four years in the Carter Administration as
Special Assistant to the President for Congressional Affairs, he joined
Walker/Free Associates in 1981 as the Vice-Chair.  Mr. Free is a former
president of the American Society of House Chief Clerks and Senate
Secretaries and was active in the National Conference of State
Legislatures.  Before coming to Washington, he served as Chief Clerk and
Executive Officer of the Tennessee House of Representatives.

     Mr. Free received a B.S. in Economics and Political Science and an
M.A. in Public Administration from Middle Tennessee State University.

     The Federal Home Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) is a
stockholder-owned corporation chartered by Congress in 1970, supporting
home ownership and rental housing through the creation and development of a
secondary market for residential mortgages.  Freddie Mac provides a
continuous flow of funds to mortgage lenders, estimated at over $100
billion annually.
