PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES CAROLINE MATANO YANG TO THE
J. WILLIAM FULBRIGHT FOREIGN SCHOLARSHIP BOARD
President Clinton today announced his intention to reappoint Caroline
Matano Yang as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship
Board.
Ms. Caroline Matano Yang, of Kailua, Hawaii, is an international
education consultant who has been on the Board since 1995, becoming
vice-chair in 1999. She was Executive Director of the Japan-United States
Educational Commission in Tokyo for over 20 years before returning to
Hawaii in 1995. During Ms. Yang's tenure as Executive Director, the
Fulbright Program in Japan became bi-nationally funded and was a pioneer
among Fulbright programs worldwide in fundraising from the private sector.
For her contributions to cross-cultural understanding through the
Fulbright Program, Ms. Yang has been honored with the Smith College Medal,
the Japanese Foreign Minister's Award, and the Marita Houlihan Award from
the Association of International Educators. She is a member of the
selections committee for the Mike Mansfield Fellowships to Japan and the
Pearl S. Buck Award from Randolph Macon Women's College, and also serves on
the International Advisory Council of the Tokyo Foundation in Japan and the
International Studies Advisory Council of Hawaii Pacific University. She
is immediate past president of the Friends of the East West Center, a
trustee of the Japan-America Society of Hawaii, and a member of the
America-Japan Society in Tokyo, the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan,
the Committee of Foreign Relations in Honolulu, and the Pacific and Asian
Affairs Council.
Ms. Yang received her B.A. from Smith College and her M.A. from
Michigan
State University.
The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board has responsibility
for the selection of participants in the Fulbright educational exchange
programs. The Board also oversees the policies of the Fulbright program.
In any given year, more than 6,000 students, scholars, teachers, and
trainees are awarded new or renewed grants under the program. The
Fulbright Program, which is administered through the Department of State,
finances studies, research, and other educational activities for American
citizens and nations abroad and for citizens and nationals of foreign
countries in American universities. The Fulbright Program also promotes
American studies in foreign countries, foreign language training and area
studies in the United States and abroad.
