A description of the MacDowell Colony for artists
"My hope for the future is that Americans will carry out its leadership role in the world based upon a vision of global community and the practice of global responsibility. What this means to me and to my work in museums is the opportunity for America's museums and cultural organizations, in cooperation with their international counterparts, to play a special role in creating sustainable communities. In preserving the diverse customs, languages, traditions, and environments of local peoples and regions, museums will contribute to the continuance of culture by saving and returning to our communities the collective heritage of our diverse and changing world. As we enter a new century and millennium museums can be key players in promoting a sustainable balance of cultural diversity, equity, the natural environment and economic growth in our increasingly global world."
