U.S. SECRETARY OF LABOR ALEXIS HERMAN AND PRESIDENT'S ADVISORY BOARD TO MEET WITH AMERICAN INDIAN LEADERS

Washington, D.C. -- On Tuesday, January 13, Labor Secretary Alexis Herman and Advisory Board members to the President's Initiative on Race will meet with American Indian tribal leaders and representatives of American Indian organizations. The meeting will be held at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona, in conjunction with the Advisory Board's regular meeting which is scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, in Phoenix.

"The President has initiated a dialogue with the American people about race. As Labor Secretary I am pleased to be able to participate in this continuing conversation, " Secretary Herman said. "It is important that all Americans participate, and that is why I am so pleased that in Phoenix we will have the opportunity to hear from the Native American community. For this effort to be successful the voices of all Americans must be heard."

The meeting, moderated by Laura Harris, senior consultant to the President's Initiative on Race, will include: Governor Mary Thomas, Gila River Indian Community; President Albert Hale, Navajo Nation; Ms. Carol Lujan, Associate Professor for the School of Justice Studies at Arizona State University and the Director of American Indian Studies Department; and Executive Director Barney Botone, Albuquerque Indian Center.

The roundtable discussion with leaders and representatives of American Indian tribes from Arizona and New Mexico will provide Advisory Board members an opportunity to hear directly the challenging issues of race that affect American Indians from this region of the country.

Special emphasis will be placed on the role of race in employment and economic opportunity.

The meeting is open to the public, and will conclude with an opportunity for input from the audience.
