Adele Simmons Introduction
Introduction by JANE WALES
Adele Simmons is a remarkable human being whom I am proud to call a friend. We know her from her many lives: As a scholar, an Africanist, and an academic at both Princeton and Tufts. We know her as a college president at Hampshire College, where she promoted the education of many of the people we are relying upon today to help us address the kinds of problems we are facing in the future. We know her as an activist who has brought public attention to some of the most pressing policy issues of our time, and as a visionary who has used the presidency of the MacArthur Foundation to support the development of ideas and actions that will help us move into the 21st century. I am very pleased that Adele Simmons has agreed to chair this session.
