Day 3: South Phoenix, ArizonaJack Swilling and “Lord Darell” Duppa built the first settlement on the site that became Phoenix in 1867. Though Phoenix as a whole has achieved remarkable growth and prosperity in the twentieth century, South Phoenix has experienced economic distress and social problems in recent years. The 19.9-square mile Enterprise Community encompasses depressed sections of South Phoenix and downtown. The heavily Hispanic area is depressed, with a 14.8% unemployment rate and a 48% poverty rate. The Enterprise Community seeks to revitalize the area with school-to-work projects, small business loans, job training and other programs. |
