Fall 1997

Welcome to the fall 1997 issue of Inside the White House, a newsletter designed to introduce you to some of the interesting people, places, and events in our nation's capital. This issue will let you meet a few of the many individuals who work "behind the scenes" at the White House.

If you and your family or classmates have visited or studied about the White House, you probably learned about the State Floor -- the Blue Room, Red Room, Green Room, East Room, and the State Dining Room -- and the famous men and women who have walked through its historic halls. But have you ever wondered who keeps the rooms so clean? Or wished to visit with the butler who oversees State Dinners? Or thought about what the pastry chef might recommend for a midnight snack? Maybe you've wondered whose fine penmanship graces the official invitations to formal events, or what it might be like to be one of Socks' best friends. In the following pages, you'll meet some of the people who can answer these questions and who help to make the White House not only a beautiful living museum, but also a comfortable and gracious home.

I hope that you enjoy learning about some of the fascinating people who have devoted their lives to public service by working at the White House. Mrs. Clinton and I are deeply grateful for their dedication, which preserves this extraordinary house as a lasting symbol of America's heritage.

William J. Clinton
