THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________________ For Immediate Release August 24, 2000 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES TRUDIE KIBBE REED AS A MEMBER OF THE PRESIDENT?S BOARD OF ADVISORS ON HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES The President today announced his intent to appoint Trudie Kibbe Reed, Ed.D. to serve as a member of the President?s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed, of Little Rock, Arkansas, is the 11th President of Philander Smith College in Little Rock and is the first woman to serve in this capacity in the college?s 123 years of history. Dr. Reed brings a wealth of experience and expertise as an educator, administrator, visionary, and public speaker. She has developed the nation?s first academic minor in Black Family Studies and serves on many national and local boards, including the Athena Foundation, which opens doors of leadership opportunities for women, the United States Department of Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, the Foundation for the Mid South, the University Senate of The United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church Foundation, and the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce. From 1995 to 1998, she was the Director of Leadership Studies, Dean of The Leadership Institute, and Founder and Co-Editor of A Leadership Journal: Women in Leadership - Sharing the Vision at Columbia College of South Carolina. From 1984 to 1995, she served as the Associate General Secretary of the General Council on Ministries of The United Methodist Church. From 1977 to 1984, Dr. Reed was the General Secretariat (CEO) of the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women in The United Methodist Church. Dr. Reed received B.A. and M.S.S.W. degrees from the University of Texas in Austin, and M.A. and Ed.D. degrees in Adult and Higher Education from Columbia University. The President?s Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities issues an annual report on participation by historically black colleges and universities in federally supported programs. The Board also provides advice to the Secretary of Education on how to increase the private sector role in strengthening these institutions. 30-30-30
