PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JAMES THOMPSON TO THE
ABRAHAM LINCOLN BICENTENNIAL COMMISSION
President Clinton announced today his intent to appoint James R.
Thompson to the
Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.
The Honorable James R. Thompson, of Chicago, Illinois, was the
longest-serving governor of Illinois, serving from 1977 to 1991. Governor
Thompson is currently a partner in the international law firm of Winston &
Strawn, and also serves as the firm?s Chairman and Chairman of the
Executive Committee. Governor Thompson also is a member of the board of
directors of many companies, including FMC Corporation, the Chicago Board
of Trade, Jefferson Smurfit Group, Prime Retail, Inc., Metal Management,
Inc., Prime Group Realty Trust, Hollinger International, Public Review
Board, Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Union and Navigant
Consulting, Inc. Additionally, he is a member of the board of trustees of
the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Chicago
Council on Foreign Relations, and the Illinois Math and Science Academy
Foundation.
Governor Thompson did his undergraduate work at the University of
Illinois and Washington University and received a J.D. from Northwestern
University Law School.
The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission was created by Congress to
study activities that may be carried out by the Federal Government to honor
Abraham Lincoln on the 200th anniversary of his birth in 2009.
