  PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES FLOYD ADAMS, JR. TO THE ADVISORY COUNCIL ON HISTORIC
                                  PRESERVATION

     The President today announced his intent to appoint Floyd Adams, Jr. as a
member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

     The Honorable Floyd Adams, Jr., of Savannah, Georgia, now serves as
Savannah,s 63rd Mayor.  Before becoming Mayor in 1991, he was the first
African-American elected to a citywide post when he was elected
alderman-at-large on the City Council.  Additionally, he has been the publisher
of the Savannah Herald since 1984, and in 1997 was named the "Publisher of the
Year" by the National Newspaper Publishers Association.  Mayor Adams is a member
of the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities, chairman of the
Chief elected Officials of the Seacoast Workforce Development Board, a member of
the United States Conference of Mayors and a member of the United States
Conference of Black Mayors.  In 1999, he was appointed by the Governor of
Georgia to the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority and to the Workforce
Investment Board.

       Mayor Adams attended Armstrong State College in Savannah.

     The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is an independent Federal
agency, which was established in 1966 through the Historic Preservation Act.
The Council advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation
matters, assesses the effectiveness of state, local, and private programs in
carrying out the purposes of the Act and makes recommendations on how to improve
the National Historic Preservation Program.  In addition, the Council reviews
federally licensed projects that affect properties listed in or eligible for the
National Register of Historic Places.  Its members are also responsible for
issuing the President,s Historic Preservation Awards.
