STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT
I commend the House for its actions regarding the restoration of America,s
Everglades with the passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2000.
The Everglades provision included in this legislation enjoys genuine
bipartisan support in the Congress, as well as from agricultural, community,
business and environmental groups in Florida. It will ensure that this national
treasure is protected and provides clean water to Florida,s cities and farming
communities.
This provision also honors the memory and commitment of Governor Lawton
Chiles for his dedication to the Everglades restoration. The time to save the
Everglades is now. I urge Congress to present these Everglades provisions to
the President as soon as possible.
