                     STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

                    President Clinton Travels to Brunei
                                and Vietnam

President Clinton will attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
8th Economic Leaders Meeting November 15-16 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.
The annual meeting will bring together the leaders of the 21 economies that
comprise the APEC organization, which collectively account for nearly
two-thirds of U.S. trade with the world. During the gathering, President
Clinton will also hold bilateral meetings with several leaders to discuss
issues of mutual concern.

Following the APEC meeting, the President will travel to Vietnam at the
invitation of President Luong. He will address the range of issues we hope
to advance with the people and government of Vietnam following the
normalization of our ties with their country.
