PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES BETTY BUMPERS AS A MEMBER TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
                        FOR THE INSTITUTE OF PEACE

     The President today announced his intent to nominate Betty Bumpers as
a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Peace.

     Ms. Betty Bumpers, of Little Rock, Arkansas, is the founder of Peace
Links, a non-profit grassroots organization that promotes peace.  She has
served as the organization?s president since 1982.  In 1991, Ms. Bumpers
and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter founded Every Child by Two, an
organization that promotes early childhood immunization.  Ms. Bumpers
received two Paul Harris Fellowship awards for her immunization program and
her work to foster international understanding. Ms. Bumpers also received
an Excellence in Public Service Award from the American Academy of
Pediatrics, as well as a Distinguished Citizen Award from the National
Peace Foundation.

     Ms. Bumpers obtained her education at the University of Arkansas, Iowa
State University, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

     The United States Institute of Peace is a bipartisan board established
in 1948 by an Act of Congress to promote international peace and the
resolution of international conflict without violence through education,
training, research, and public information.
