 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES STEVEN CLAYTON STAFFORD AS UNITED STATES MARSHAL
                  FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA

     The President today announced his intent to nominate Steven Clayton
Stafford to serve as United States Marshal for the Southern District of
California.

     Mr. Steven Clayton Stafford, of San Diego, California, has served in
various positions with the United States Marshals Service since 1981.
Currently, Mr. Stafford is the Acting United States Marshal in the Southern
District of California.  In 1997, he served as the Assistant Chief Deputy
United States Marshal for the district as well where he was responsible for
overseeing all operational and administrative divisions of the district.
In 1999, the district was named Distinguished District of the year.  From
1987 to 1997, he was a Supervisory Deputy United States Marshal in the
District of Massachusetts.  During this period, Mr. Stafford also served as
Acting Regional Coordinator of the New England Organized Crime Enforcement
Task Force.

     Mr. Stafford received a B.S. degree from Northeastern University in
1981.

     The United States Marshal Service is responsible for providing support
and protection for the Federal courts, apprehending Federal fugitives,
operating the Federal Witness Security program, maintaining custody of and
transporting Federal prisoners, and responding to emergency crisis
situations.
