The President today announced the recess appointment of Francisco J. Sanchez to serve as Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Mr. Sanchez was nominated on June 8, 2000, and his nomination is currently pending before the Senate.
Mr. Francisco J. Sanchez, of Tampa, Florida, until recently served as Special Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the Office of the Special Envoy to the Americas at the White House. From 1993 to 1999, Mr. Sanchez was a senior consultant for Conflict Management, Inc. and managing director of CMI International Group, an international consulting firm specializing in interest-based negotiation strategy, relationship management, mediation, and conflict resolution. From 1987 to 1992, Mr. Sanchez was an associate attorney at Steel Hector & Davis Law Firm in Florida. From 1984 to 1987, Mr. Sanchez served as the chief assistant to the Lieutenant Governor of Florida. He received a B.A. and a J.D. from Florida State University and a M.A. from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
The Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs at the U.S. Department of Transportation is responsible to the Secretary for analysis, development, articulation, and review of policies and plans for aviation and international transportation. Without an Assistant Secretary for Aviation and International Affairs, the U.S. Department of Transportation is greatly hindered in fulfilling its mission.
