FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES SPACE POLICY REVIEW

WASHINGTON -- The President has directed the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Security Council (NSC) to lead a comprehensive Administration review of national space policy, including national security, civilian, and commercial issues.
"Given the sweeping changes that have taken place in the world and in the Nation's domestic and international space policy over the past few years, now is an appropriate time to undertake a comprehensive interagency review," said Assistant to the President for Science and Technology John H. Gibbons, who also is the Director of OSTP.

A number of National Space Policy Directives (NSPDs) were developed in previous Administrations through the now- defunct National Space Council. These NSPDs outline national policy, guidelines, and implementing actions with respect to the conduct of U.S. space programs and related activities, Gibbons explained. In addition, there are several national security directives that also contain policy guidance related to space issues.

OSTP and NSC will co-chair an Interagency Working Group to coordinate the review. In conducting the review, this interagency group also will survey related national security directives, as appropriate, and may seek advice from members of the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology and other appropriate representatives of industry, academia, the nonprofit sector, and state and local governments.

Recommendations resulting from the review will be provided to Gibbons and to the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs no later than November 1, 1995.
