Upon arrival in Paris, the President will proceed directly to his bilateral meeting with President Chirac. The meeting provides President Clinton with an opportunity to thank President Chirac for hosting the NATO-Russia summit as well as for his efforts to help bring closure to this historic agreement and to thank, on behalf of the American people, the people of France for their hospitality and cooperation. This meeting also serves as an opportunity to renew the friendship America and France share in helping to define the new Euro-Atlantic community.

The meeting is also an opportunity for President Clinton to underscore his commitment to making NATO and Russia full partners in the security of Europe as we enter the 21st century. President Clinton is likely to restate his determination to see that an enlarged NATO neither marginalizes nor isolates Russia, and that it more fully integrates Russia into the mainstream of an undivided Europe. Following his meeting with President Yeltsin, President Clinton will depart Paris for the Hague.
