Washington D.C. -- Today, the White House Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach will celebrate Take Our Daughters To Work Day by hosting an event with the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Ms. Foundation, the International Alliance, the Financial Women's Association of New York at the White House. This event will also launch the SBA's Discover Bu$iness website, an interactive site designed to help young women discover their entrepreneurial talents. Department of Treasury Secretary Larry Summers will serve as the keynote speaker. Also making remarks will be Shari Dyon Perry, the 14 year old young woman co-star in LIFETIME's series "Any Day Now." Event attendees will include members of women's trade organizations and other program geared towards girls.
A reception will immediately follow at the White House Conference Center co-sponsored by the White House Women's Office, the White House Office of Administration and the U.S. SBA. This follow-up event will feature exhibits, entertainment, and highlight a collection of products and services about youth entrepreneurship presented by the co-sponsoring organizations and other Federal "girl" programs. Attendees will include the Executive Office of the President staff, their daughters, and other invited guests.
Take Our Daughters To Work Day was launched in the early 1990s following extensive research by leaders from the Ms. Foundation for Women and the Harvard Project on young girls and their adolescent experiences. Research findings indicated that women strongly felt that they wanted to change the adolescent experience for their daughters. This, and many experimental programs, later led to the launching of the first Take Our Daughters To Work Day on the fourth Thursday in April 1993.
President Clinton created the White House Office for Women's Initiatives and Outreach in 1995, to serve as a liaison between the White House and the women's community. The Women's Office contributes to the development of Administration policy as it relates to women and families, often bringing the concerns of outside experts and constituency groups into the policy making process. Within the White House, the Women's Office advocates for issues important to women, including social security, Medicare, healthcare reform, pay equity, domestic violence prevention, reproductive rights and balancing work and family.
