Gaza City is the principal city of the Gaza Strip and is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. A city of historical and religious importance, Gaza City has been disputed since ancient times. Gaza City came under Israeli occupation in 1967, and in May 1994, Gaza City became the headquarters of the new Palestinian Authority.

Gaza City is the economic center for a region that grows citrus fruits and other crops. A variety of other wares are sold in Gaza’s many street bazaars. Gaza City also serves as the transportation hub for the Gaza strip and contains a small port that serves a local fishing fleet. The points of interest found in Gaza City are: the Great Mosque, built during the Crusades and later converted into a mosque; Samson’s Monument, commemorating the Biblical hero, Samson; and Al Jundi, the Square of the Unknown Soldier, built by the Egyptian Army.
