During President Cleveland's first term the room contained Louis C. Tiffany's decor, introduced by President Arthur. A shield-and-star pattern replaces the sweeping ovals of the ceiling. The delicate robin's egg tint of the hand-pressed wallpaper was accented with ivory; in the rosettes sparkled inlay of opaque or colored glass. From the mantel, below Monroe's vases and clock, hangs a new adornment: velvet fringe.
